As a 21-year-old trying to make it in life without college, I'm glad I read this book. Not only did Leah raise a lot of excellent points about higher education, but she helped confirm what I already believed to be true. I suspect it will be difficult for anyone to argue with the points she raises throughout this book, especially considering she has been through much of it personally and she knows exactly what she is talking about. In addition to raising a lot of good points she also provides some great advice to budding entrepreneurs. And to top it all off, her writing in incredibly entertaining and there were several parts that had me laughing out loud. Definitely give this book a read. )
Leah Bell gives us a passionate look at how the education system is leaving students today with too few job options and too much debt after graduation. From a first hand account of "been there done that," Leah provides lots of extra examples of what she wished she would have had in college like enough good professors who truly had her best interests at heart.
Leah doesn't leave us hanging though. She channels her angry grad passion into what she can do, which is take control of her destiny by looking at other options such as entrepreneurship and creating one's own way, good job or not. Leah is focused on helping others live a balanced life, not just surviving a dead career until retirement. The best part about this book is the motivation and inspiration she provides along the way to help you get what you want out of life on your own terms. I'll sign up for that every time!
Wow! This is a book everyone needs to read.. Leah Bell has written a clear, thoughtful response to the higher education situation in this country. It grabbed me in the Table of Contents (no joke!) because of the interesting way she has laid out the sections of the book. She even has appropriately placed the "midterm" and the "final" in the book as well as "homework" after each chapter to allow the reader to process the information she has presented. I really enjoyed the information about becoming an entrepreneur. As someone who is their own boss, Leah's words rang true! I will highly recommend this book to all the graduates I know heading off to college this year!
I always thought a book like this needed to be written. The landscape of education has changed so much and it is a night and day different dynamic than it was 20 or 30 years ago. I feel many people feel sucked into the idea that they must follow a certain route, however it is a route that may not be as effective as it once was and at the same time leaving people with crippling debt.
Now more than ever people really need to weigh all the options before making such a monumental decision. Leah obviously stresses the importance of education, that's not the issue. The issue is going through a system that ultimately may cause you to take a few steps back instead of forward. What stuck out to me here is the HUGE difference and confusion between a college education and a college experience, the latter being what a majority of people base their decision around.
A must read for anyone that has ever thought "There must be a better way".
Leah describes how the world has changed and why following the traditional path could set you up for a lifetime of misery and dept. How the financial system traps us into a vicious cycle and how to make smarter financial decisions that could potentially allow you to live a happier life.
