As Dorie Clark turns fifty she is struck by the realization that life is a once-around-the-block affair, and she has a lot of unresolved situations to confront. A lifelong struggle to understand a seemingly unknowable mother, an uncertainty about her effectiveness as a mother, her general unhappiness about her somewhat haphazard career - and an understanding that her second marriage, while happy, could somehow be in jeopardy - propel Dorie into therapy for the first time in her life. As a series of unfortunate events unfold and she struggles to meet the challenges, she also comes to realize she has the capacity to make more of her life, to connect to the people in her life in a more positive way, and to find her own "house of joy".

Reading this book turned out to be the most pleasant surprise I've had in a good long time. Knowing a bit of the author's background, I expected the quality of writing to be good, but after reading the description, I wasn't sure this would be my cup of tea. I generally don't read fiction unless it's a huge, meticulously researched, historical saga. I tend to shy away from movies and books that might be labeled chic flicks and "girlie books" (as one friend calls them). I think the reason is because they always make me feel like an observer, which smacks of snooping, or worse, voyeurism. I don't want to be an observer; I expect to be a participant.

In a word, this book was amazing! The criteria I use to judge a novel is simple. It must transport me - that is to say, I want to see what the author sees. I want to feel like I'm there. I want to hear, smell, and feel the environment. I want the food to make my mouth water.

I also want a compelling story. I want a reason to turn the page. I want the book to beckon to me if I take a dinner break.

Searching for the House of Joy was all of these things. I read it all in one sitting. When I couldn't stand the hunger any longer, I rushed through making a sandwich and took it back to the computer so I could eat while reading.

The book is not perfect. It needs some minor editing. But frankly, I'm flabbergasted that a publisher did not snatch this up and give it the polish and promotion it deserves.

I finished this book yearning for a sequel. I can think of no higher compliment than that.

Searching for the House of Joy edition by Ruth Calia Stives Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I connected with every person in this book,. Searching for the House of Joy is the
Best book I've read in a very long time !
What a great read! It really captured that bubble when you turn 50 and realize that your children are adults with their own lives and choices, and when we learn the most about ourselves.
I hope Dorie returns to catch us up!
A deep insight into the mind of a woman who decides her life is too dysfunctional for her own liking, and goes into therapy in an attempt to sort out her own and her families problems. It builds up a fair amount of tension, and never lets you know till right at the end whether she actually finds her house of joy or not. A very good read.
I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to dig into a story that is true to life, shares so much of the central New Jersey experience and provides a warm and tender tale of finding one's way to their own house of joy.

But get the Sloppy Moore!!
There are at least two impressions that remain after reading this book. First is the weaving of several threads into a cohesive and believable storyline, neatly tying things up to create a sense of fulfillment; and secondly, the food. The food! I had to cut myself some cheese and grab the crackers before I got a quarter of the way into the story. If Ms. Stives feeds her family as well as the characters in her book, they are a privileged group! If there's a weakness in the book it might be that all of Dorie's problems are eventually resolved, giving the book a bit of "happily ever afterness." But this doesn't detract from the experience of living through the problems with her, which feels real and uncontrived. And did I mention the food? I look forward to reading more of Ms. Stives' work.
